Now playing at the Noel Coward Theatre.

After much anticipation, Ivo Van Hove's star-studded adaptation of All About Eve took to the stage. Based on the classic 1950s film of the same name, the production boasts of having both Gillian Anderson and Lily James on the bill. But what did the critics think?

Time Out London was full of praise for the production, cooing over stars of the show Gillian Anderson as Margo Channing and Lily James as her young rival Eve, "[Anderson's] performance as ageing actress Margo Channing in Ivo Van Hove's stage version of 'All About Eve' is absolutely one of those 'I was there' moments". They continued with "All About Eve works terrifically, in part because the cast and script are excellent, in part because Can Hove's usual box of live video tricks is so apt for a story that always felt half of film, half of theatre".

The Evening Standard also praised both Anderson and James saying that "Anderson's smallest gestures, such as a brief pensive wrinkling of the brow, are eloquent", and continuing with "[Lily James']a performance of bright-eyed vitality, even though she's often pushed too far into the production's periphery, and James captures the cloying sincerity that masks Eve's hunger for fame."

The Guardian had mixed feelings about the production, although they praised the performances the publication rounded off their review with "in the end, the show remains a clever, mixed-media hybrid that never achieves the emotional pull of a first-rate drama."

What is All About Eve about?

The original Single White Female, All About Eve follows the story of beloved 1940s Broadway star Margot Channing, whose glittering success both on the stage and in her personal life are threatened by the appearance of the youthful superfan and new assistant, Eve.

What begins as adoration soon turns to a dangerous obsession as Eve insinuates herself into every aspect of Margot's life. Increasingly isolated and paranoid of her new shadow, Margot finds herself sprawling into madness as Eve's scheming begins its final, horrifying stage.

All About Eve is now playing at the Noel Coward Theatre through to 10 May.
