The Wars of the Roses: Richard III

The Wars of the Roses: Richard III at Rose Theatre

Why see The Wars of the Roses: Richard III?

THE FINAL BATTLE FOR THE THRONE

Joely Richardson and Rufus Hound head up the third installation of Shakespeare's Lancaster vs York plays, in a saga that bears more than a passing resemblance to historical/fantasy series Game of Thrones. Three plays, one 100 years war, all for the crown of England. Richardson stars as Princess Margaret of Anjou, whose story runs through all of the plays as a politically savvy woman with Rufus Hound as John Cade and other characters. Often treated as a standalone play, Richard III is the third play in Trevor Nunn's epic Roses cycle, culminating in the end of the epic civil war between the houses of Lancaster and York. This play will run in rep with Henry VI and Edward IV and is set to be a stunning revival of Shakespeare's works.

the final countdown to the crown

The crippled yet ruthlessly ambitious Richard is a wicked man, full of mischief, murder and betrayal, as he works his way up the ladder of royal power; and still in his twenties too! Richardson appears as a tortured, ageing and tragic Margaret of Anjou who is abused at his hands as a "withered hag" (delightful!). The steady stream of murder and lust for power lead to an epic confrontation on the battlefield at Bosworth, where the ghosts of those who played their part, finally have their say.
