Assassins

Why see Assassins?

assassins has now sold out.

Cold-blooded killers are the subject of this Tony winning musical from Stephen Sondheim, namely those 13 wretched souls who've taken aim on US Presidents, and the four that were successful. Unusual stories to base a musical on, sure. But with typical Sondheim grace and wit, Assassins is likely to be the highlight in the Menier Chocolate Factory's winter season.

Directed by man of the moment Jamie Lloyd (Richard III) and starring Catherine Tate and Andy Nyman and Broadway alum Aaron Tviet, (Enjolras in the Les Miserables film) as just a few of the would be killers, you know you can expect great things and very dark comedy from a revival with this pedigree.

Duck and cover: What did you say Assassins was about again?

Murderers, essentially, and those who would be murderers. Are they disaffected wackos, or do we have more in common with those lone rangers than we first thought. From Lincoln to Nixon, Ford to JFK, these symbols of power had had more than a fair few enemies. But this is the story of the smoking gun, the actions and thoughts that led to pulling the trigger, set to a recognisably Sondheim score...

Complexity and simplicity combine to create excellence

Assassins is a curiously emotional Sondheim, one which combines a simple premise - motivation - with complex comedy & precise musical Americana. This production used a 2 sided set of flats that revolved, with a doorway, each turn bringing with it a new perspective on an old question - why? The performances were excellent, the director’s simple touches brilliant - Gerald Ford was so stupid he really couldn’t fart & walk at the same time - and the masks worked very well to convey each victim. Reagan’s repeated posing for the next shot was masterful. Thoroughly enjoyable 2 hours which I would like to live through again & again. See it!! ... Read more
